History
The Department of Civil Aviation was established on 10 November 1982. This department functioned under the President's Office. Civil Aviation functions till then were undertaken by the Civil Aviation Section of the Ministry of Transport.
The Civil Aviation Authority was established on 18 February 1985. The Authority was entrusted with the function to undertake the work carried out by the Department of Civil Aviation and Maldives Airports Authority.
The Department of Civil Aviation was again established on 12 December 1988 after dissolving the Civil Aviation Authority. At the same time Maldives Airports Authority was established. The Department of Civil Aviation functioned under the President's Office.
On 11 November 1993, the functions of the Department of Civil Aviation was transferred to the Ministry of Transport and Communication / Civil Aviation Department.
On 11 November 1998, with the establishment of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, the civil Aviation mandate was transfered to this Ministry.
On 14 July 2005, Civil Aviation functions was transferred to the newly established Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and functioned as the Civil Aviation Department of the the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
On 12 November 2008, Civil Aviation mandate was transferred to the newly established Ministry of Civil Aviation and Communication and functioned as the Civil Aviation Department of the the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Communication.
On 07th July 2010 , Civil Aviation mandate was transferred to the newly established Ministry of Transport and Communication and at present functions as the Civil Aviation Department of the the Ministry of Transport and Communication.
